You can import PDF documents directly into EndNote, if the document includes a machine-readable DOI (Digital Object Identifier). EndNote will automatically create a reference that includes the main citation details.

To create a reference in EndNote by importing the PDF:

  1. In EndNote, select File > Import > File (select Folder if there are multiple PDFs to import from the same location)
  2. Click Choose to locate the file or folder you wish to import
  3. Select Import Option > PDF from the drop-down menu
  4. Select Import

Note: If there is no DOI or the document is not machine-readable, the file will import without including any details. The Title field in EndNote will be created in the format <filename.pdf>.

In these cases, right-click the reference, then choose Find Reference Updates to locate the reference fields.

Otherwise, export the citation from the library search box or database, or manually create the reference entry.
