When developing a strategic scholarly publishing plan it is important to consider whether your research outputs will be eligible for inclusion in the University’s Excellence Research Australia (ERA) submission.

The next round of ERA was scheduled to take place in 2023, however, the reference period for published research outputs for this round has already passed. Given the potential changes to ERA, an assessment round will not be conducted in 2024.

To be eligible to contribute to the publication component of Western Sydney University’s (WSU) next ERA submission, the following research outputs apply:

  • Research outputs were authored by a staff member who is affiliated with WSU at the Staff Census Date, 31 March 2022.
  • Research outputs were published during the six-year reference period of 1 January 2016 – 31 December 2021.

The full list of eligibility criteria for research outputs (including for Non-Traditional Research Outputs [NTROs]) can be found in Section 4.4 of the 2023 ERA Submission Guidelines (p. 25-36).

It details that your research outputs must meet the ERA’s definition of research, and that journal articles must be peer-reviewed and published in a journal that is included on the ERA 2023 Submission Journal List.

NTROs must have become available publicly during the ERA 2023 research output reference period.

Institutions should refer to the ERA 2023 Discipline Matrix to establish which NTRO types are applicable to which discipline.

Refer to the Australian Research Council (ARC) website for updates.
