Before downloading your e-book

  1. Download Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) by choosing the link for the relevant operating system (Windows or Macintosh).
  2. Install ADE:
    Windows
    •    Double click on the ADE installer file (locate the file under Downloads in either your browser or File Explorer).
    •    Tick the checkbox to accept the license agreement.
    •    Click Next twice, then Install.
    •    If it appears, unitck the option for Norton Security Scan and click Next.
    •    Click Close once the install is completed.
    Mac
    •    Double click on the ADE installer file (locate the file under Downloads in either your browser or Finder).
    •    Click on Continue twice.
    •    Agree to the licence agreement then click Install.

    If you have already installed ADE, proceed to step 3.
  3. Open ADE.
  4. Click on Help and select Authorize computer...
  5. Enter your Adobe ID (the email address you used to create your Adobe ID) and password. (Note: This is NOT your WesternAccount login, but an ID you need to create using the Create an Adobe ID link. For further information regarding Adobe IDs, please visit the Adobe website).
  6. Click Authorize.

Download your e-book

  1. Open the book in Ebook Central via the link provided in the book's catalogue record or from your vUWS 'Readings & Resources' list.
  2. Click on Download Book.
  3. In the To download, please sign in popup window, click Continue.
  4. Enter your WesternAccount login (NOT your Adobe ID) if/when prompted and click Submit.
  5. In the popup window (Step 1. Device), choose Laptop Desktop.
  6. Select I’m using my own computer, then click Continue.
  7. In the next window (Step 2. Install), to install ADE choose Get Adobe Digital Editions. If you have installed the software, click Done with this step.
  8. In the next window (Step 3. Download), choose the Loan Length and Download Format (if applicable, e.g. ePub or PDF).
  9. Click Download.
  10. An Adobe Content Server Message (.acsm) file for the book will download to your browser. Click on the .acsm file and the book will open in ADE. If the book does not open in ADE, please refer to the 'Opening your e-book' steps below.

Opening your e-book

  1. Go back to ADE.
  2. Click File then Add to Library.
  3. Browse for the downloaded file:
    Windows
    •    In the Add Items to Library pop up window, choose Downloads on the left side.
    •    If you downloaded an Adobe Content Server Message (.acsm) file, select the file type in the drop down menu.
    •    Once you have located the file, select it and click Open.
    Mac
    •    In the Downloads pop up window, choose Downloads on the left side.
    •    If you downloaded an Adobe Content Server Message (.acsm) file, click on Options. In the Show drop down menu, select ACSM files.
    •    Once you have located the file, select it and click Add.
  4. The file will begin to download (this may take a few minutes).
  5. If your e-book does not open automatically, double click on the book cover image in your ADE Library to open.
  6. When you are finished reading, click on Library in the top left-hand corner.
  7. The Library view will display all the books you have downloaded into your ADE Library.
