You may be trying to submit a file format which is not acceptable according to the Turnitin Assignment’s settings.
Check with the Unit Coordinator if you experience issues after following the instructions in the Unit Learning Guide and meeting the requirements below.
If a Turnitin Assignment is set to Allow any file type, Turnitin will accept any file:
- less than 40mb;
- and/or less than 400 pages.
Depending on the file type submitted, an Originality Report may or may not be available.
If the assignment is set to Allow only file types that Turnitin can check for originality, Turnitin will only accept files that can generate Originality Reports.
Files must include at least 20 words of machine-readable text, and be any of the following file types:
- Microsoft Word® (.doc/.docx)
- OpenOffice Text (.odt)
- WordPerfect® (.wpd)
- PostScript (.ps/.eps)
- Hangul Word Processor file (.hwp)
- Rich text format (.rtf)
- Plain text (.txt)
- Google Docs via Google Drive™
- Adobe® PDF
- Microsoft PowerPoint® (.pptx, .ppt, .ppsx, and .pps) (Speaker notes will not be included)
- Microsoft Excel® (.xls and .xlsx)
- Ensure the file does not contain spaces in between every letter (l i k e t h i s). This will not meet the requirements for the minimum word count.
- Turnitin will not accept PDF image files, forms, or portfolios, files that do not contain selectable text (e.g. a scanned file - usually an image), documents containing multiple files or files created with software other than Adobe Acrobat®. To determine if a document contains machine-readable text, try to select a section of the text. If no text is selected, the selection is not machine-readable text. Also, if a PDF file is saved as a protected file it cannot be submitted to Turnitin. To successfully upload your paper to Turnitin, you will need to remove security settings.

- Turnitin converts a PowerPoint® slide deck into a static PDF, leaving all text and images in their original format but leaving out features such as presenter notes, embedded video, and animations. Text with visual effects is not supported, and it is recommended that any visual effects such as shadows and 3D be removed prior to submitting to Turnitin.
- Excel submissions - The version of the file that can be viewed in the Document Viewer will look the same as it would if the Excel file had been saved as a PDF and submitted to Turnitin. Checking the image preview provided in the single file submission to verify that the file is presented in an acceptable manner is recommended. Users can adjust the way the file looks by editing the page setup and print area settings for the file prior to saving it and submitting it to Turnitin.
Turnitin will not generate Originality Reports for files which include less than 20 words of machine-readable text, or from any of the following file types:
- Password protected files
- Microsoft® Works (.wps) files
- Microsoft Word 2007 macros-enabled .docm files
- OpenOffice Text (.odt) files created and downloaded from Google Docs online
- Document (.doc) files created using OpenOffice, as they are not 100% Microsoft Word equivalent
- Apple Pages
- Spreadsheets created outside of Microsoft Excel (i.e. .ods)
- Text with visual effects
